For 10 years John Mason has been the go to guy at Hickory Hill Elementary. As the day custodian John has been described by others as a man who goes above and beyond to do the best possible job for everyone. He is known for doing whatever it takes and more to make sure the needs of the staff and students are taken care of in the best possible way. John would say the best part of his job is, “Being around the kids and watching them grow up Kindergarten through 6th grade.”
John’s love for the students was recently demonstrated as he was in the lunchroom doing his normal routine when 6th grade student Nick Bierschenk began choking on a nacho chip. Gina Trout, a paraprofessional working in the lunch room instantly knew Nick needed the Heimlich and went to work. However, the stubborn chip needed more force before it would come out, so John stepped in to help. With John’s extra force, the chip was dislodged and Nick could quickly breathe again. Nick’s summary of the situation echoes what the staff at Hickory Hill have always felt about John. Nick said, “He is a lifesaver.”
